Chapter 18

Being so high above sea level, the air in Denver, they say, is thinner. A golf ball will travel farther when hit because there is less drag from the air. I always liked golf but never played well. I also did not have any clubs, so I could not put the theory to the test. However, what I did put to the test was physical exhilaration. The thin air can make walking a challenge for someone who is out of shape. Traversing the circular path at Cheesman Park several times wore out my legs. I had to find a park bench and sit as Charlotte made one more trek.

We discussed her family history, her mom, and her mom’s death during the first two laps. Lap three comprised of her uncle’s bursts of anger and his inability to cope with his sister’s death. By lap four, my legs ached, and my feet screamed for me to stop, but I wanted to go further into the conversation I had started once before regarding Jane and Timmy. Knowing it was important for Charlotte to know the entire truth, including how I forgot my wallet, and of course, the roasted peanuts. I felt she needed to know the entire story, so I pushed through the pain. Some may say we commiserated on our family loss issues.

During our walk, Charlotte explained how she reached out to her uncle, who lived in Grand Junction after her mother had passed. He offered to let her stay with his family, but he verbally abused her. She had been driving her mother’s car, which had broken down two days before I met her at church and was left with no transportation. When she moved from Denver to Grand Junction, she had quit her job, too. She had no job, no car, no mother, and now no place to live because she could not stay with her uncle any longer. As if the difficulties she faced were not enough, the attorney she and her uncle hired to handle the execution of her mother’s estate threatened to declare Charlotte an unfit executor since he had not heard from Charlotte for so long. Hearing of the miraculous that took place at Cradle of Christ Church, she visited one day, hoping God would reach down to her and bring the healing and comfort she so desired.

As a child, Charlotte heard the story of Paul touching aprons, napkins, and handkerchiefs and how these items, when taken to the sick, brought healing. She thought if she took a piece of a blouse belonging to her mother to the non-denominational church, she might receive a miracle. Explaining that the Bible’s miracle was true, but she needed to be careful in putting her faith in a piece of cloth instead of God did not resonate with her. I thought it best to table the subject for another time.

Stretching my legs outward and oscillating between pulling my toes toward me as much as I could and pushing them out as far as they would go, I felt some relief.
